Ramberg
I came back to Moss last Sunday after one week break and I wondered what could I do with the rest of the day. The good idea seemed to be to go out somewhere and walk around. They say that on Jeløy island there are many beautiful paths and places to visit. Maybe they are beautiful, I thought but definitely flat. The nearest mountains were at least three hours driving from this place.
And then I realized that I climbed to not so high ”mountain” here, couple weeks ago, and it wasn’t the highest point in the neighborhood. I checked that the highest one is Ramberg (you could here that name somewhere at Lofoten islands),which lies very close to Bjørnasen and it is in fact the highest ”mountain” in Moss Kommune with its 140 meters above sea. The trail to the top has only 2 km but if you decide to go longer, you can choose Rambergløpa trail which has approx 4,5 km and goes around the mount.
Get Directions
The starting point is near 1060 road, close to the crossroads, more less in the middle of the island. You can find the trail at the end of private road, behind the last house. Unfortunately there is no parking lot. I left my car close to buss stop.
First one hundred meters lead between bushes and high grass, but then you go into the forest and trail slowly rises up.

When I ended up on an asphalt road, I realized two things. First, I finally founded a parking lot and probably better starting point for this and also for other trips in this area. And second thing: I missed the summit. In fact, top of Ramberg is hidden somewhere in the forest and if there is any path leading to this point I had to miss it. It seems to be ridiculous, because there is a huge antenna mast at the top of the mountain, and you can see it from the distance. But here, in the woods, everything is hidden behind the trees.
I decided to not go back the same route, but continued marching along Rambergløpa trail. And that was a great idea. Soon, I left the trees behind and finally I got some views. I saw the panorama view of Oslofjord with small white sailboats on it and dark, rain clouds on the sky.

I passed the beautiful located farm and after that I went again between the trees. Just before the woods I found info about rock carving from the Bronze Age and a rock with where someone, 3000 years ago graved a picture of 33 ships together with crewmen. The picture wasn’t in good condition (not as the others, discovered for example in Sarpsborg),but this is the only one such thing in Moss area.

Some time later I get out from the forest, passed by some summer houses and coast line and finally reach the road which led me to my car. All the route took me an hour and 45 minutes.
Much later I realized why I didn’t find the summit of Ramberg. In fact the mountain is called Rambergåsen and Ramberg is a place where the nearest farm is located. Well, it seems that I have a reason to get there again.
