Øye – Tyinkrysset

Few years ago I spent one weekend walking on beautiful trails which were parts of Kongevegen over Filefjell historic route. I promised myself that one day I will come back in that area and take a closer look for other parts of this route. And that day already came.

Kongevegen over Filefjell is an old road that has been built in XVIII century as a part of the road connecting Oslo and Bergen. Total length of that trail is over 100 km and it is divided in several sections, so there is no need to go all the way from Lærdal to Vang. You can choose suitable distance or place and enjoy pleasant hike. Last time I’ve been on those three sections (1, 2, 3). Now, I wanted to take part between Øye and Tyinkrysset. This is a 12km long trail and I didn’t wanted to go to Tyinkrysset and back the same way. I found out that I can hike from Øye to Tyinkrysset using mountain trails and then go back to Øye by old King’s Road.

I arrived to Øye at the Friday’s evening. After night spending into the car I was ready on new adventure early in the morning. First my path led me together along the pilgrim trail, which is heading to Kyrkjestølen. My plan was to get on Filefjell plateau and using DNT marked patch get to Tyinkrysset. And I managed to find that DNT trail. The day was very windy and walking against strong wind was a big challenge. But finally I reached Nedre Geitskinn lake. Then I supposed to cross the river which goes down from the lake to Øye and continuous my trip, but I realized that there is no option I could get to the other shore of this river. It was too wide and stream was too strong to even think about it.

I decided to go around the lake then. It wasn’t easy and my shoes were totally soaked but finally I reach the trail again. Just before that I met two reindeers. From that point the rest of the hike was easy. Long but easy and with spectacular views in 360°.

Very soon I reached Tyinkrysset and I was ready for another phase of the trip. But this I will describe next time.
