Mountains

Bjørgefjellet 895m asl

Bjørgefjell is an 895m asl mountain, part of Lifjell massif, rised up above town of Seljord and Seljordsvatnet Lake. During summer months hike on that hill could be pleasant but demanding trip and maybe one day I will have to chance to try it. Now, in the middle of March, climbing on it is a challenging expedition. I didn’t see too much snow on the mountain side when I drove east by E134 road. I reached Bjørge farm where the trail starts and begun my hike.

Initially there were not so much snow on the road. Only time to time, but together with height, it came more and more. Very soon I said goodbye to wide gravel road and continued my walk on narrow, and often steep patch in the woods.

Somewhere in the middle of the route, the snow was up to my knees but I didn’t intend to give up. The higher I get, the more difficult it was. Soon, somewhere about one kilometer from summit, the depth of the snow layer was about one meter. I considered to retreat. But then I noticed some wooden shelter construction on the top of the nearest hill and traces of snowmobile. I managed to get on those tracks, but it wasn’t so easy. The snow was up to my waist. Soon, walking on the hard snow I came up the cabin in the woods and sign directed to Bjørgefjell summit. There were also footprints in the snow led towards top. I followed them and after some time I finally get to the…

No, it was not summit yet. I stand on flat, naked rock on open air and stared on town of Seljord and the Lake below. That was only a viewing point, about 500 meters from the top. But I was too tired to go further. And the footprints ended here anyway. All I could do is to make some pictures and turn back.

The trip was really difficult. Maybe not because the height and steep slope, but because of snow. But in the end I am glad I could managed to get to the viewpoint and at least made few pictures from there. Maybe some day I will get a chance to repeat this hike in more favorable conditions.
